Expanding Ministry by Educating Unschooled Children
The BOH Scholarship Fund aims to uplift impoverished Zambian youth by providing full scholarships and education at Breath of Heaven Academy, empowering students to transform their own lives and communities. Started in 2015, the scholarships prioritize students showing academic promise but unable to afford schooling, providing them a nurturing environment focused on academics, character development, and leadership.
The Gift of Education
The Need
Thousands of Zambian children do not have access to schools or are unable to attend due to the high cost. Without a quality education, children are more vulnerable to the effects of poverty, including childhood marriage, teenage pregnancies, inadequate healthcare, malnutrition, and low-paying jobs.
The Answer
In 2015, Breath of Heaven Academy was established to provide education for children who reside at Breath of Heaven Children’s Village, home to more than 100 Zambian children who have no other place to call home. The academy enrolls an additional 300 students whose families have chosen Breath of Heaven Academy for their children.
The Reach
In its quest to bring hope and a future to more of Zambia’s orphaned and vulnerable children, the academy extended its doors to impoverished families within the community by offering scholarships at the secondary school level.
The Journey to Opportunity
Student Selection
Scholarship priority is given to students who are not currently enrolled in school but show academic promise. To help ensure their success at the academy, prospective students are screened for eligibility via academic testing in mathematics and English. To determine need, parents or guardians are interviewed; follow-up home visits are conducted, as necessary, to verify the family’s circumstances.
Students Receive
A gifted teaching and administrative staff, combined with modern facilities, provide students with a disciplined, nurturing, and challenging environment designed to foster academic achievement, character development, and 21st century leadership skills. Ongoing teacher training and a college-going curriculum allow teachers to deliver a world-class education, while small class size ensures that students receive individual attention and can actively participate in the learning process.
